Every human has a unique light to shine on their journey. That's you too! And, inside your body lives a history of humans that came before and will continue beyond. You are not only a part of this vast web of cumulative wisdom - you came from it! So tap into your source for perspective – mother nature, an ancient tradition, a spiritual belief, or a network of modern-day intelligence.

Gathering knowledge to deepen your understanding of your life or its purpose may come from many sources. And this information collection unfolds uniquely for every individual. Though our shared human experience is more common than not, your interpretation of the world is what makes you brilliant and unique!

Your level of awareness and the wisdom gained from it shapes who you are at your core. Wisdom (or lack of it) also impacts how you live in daily life. You may think of a wise person as having read many books or maybe someone with a scholarly or religious position. However, the collection of knowledge doesn't make anyone wise. Wisdom is the collection and application of insights that guide decisions to lead to a more harmonious life and community.

Though Oscar Wilde's quote, "wisdom comes with age," is true in the sense that with more time on this planet, you may have more opportunities to listen, learn, and gather perspective from your experiences and others, it's not guaranteed! So, with your satchel of life's lessons and experiences, your invitation is to pause and reflect upon your past, pay attention to the present moment, and imagine a future that matches the world that brings you the most peace. It's just that simple… and complex!

As we've shared, there are infinite paths to wisdom and opportunities to absorb your life's lessons. Whether you have a specific spiritual belief or not, reconnect with and pay attention to the channels that feel most aligned with you. In this article, we've chosen to highlight practices that help you tap into the wisdom found in nature and the human lines that brought you into existence.

If you'd like to get started by strengthening your ability to tap into the present moment, take a peek at these simple, quick activities.

1. Connect with the Moon Cycle

full moon

You're hurling around the sun at 67,000 mph on a planet that is twirling at 1,000 mph. Among other things (like life itself), this dizzying speed keeps us literally on the ground, plants in the garden, and enjoying sunsets daily. But what about that giant rock just a bit smaller than the width of the entire United States floating through the void at more than 2,000 mph? Yep, that sweet-faced, unassuming Moon is lighting up your life too. And there's a world (pun intended) of wisdom it has to impart. Connecting with the lunar cycle is a powerful way to discover deeper insights about your natural world, ancient wisdom, and yourself.

We might have all learned about the lunar cycle in 4th grade, but if you've slept since then, we'll offer a little science lesson here. The Moon is on a 29.5 rotisserie before it completes one orbit. As the Moon sashays its way around mama earth over the course of a month-ish, we get to enjoy our beloved lunar phases or shapes. During the first two weeks of the lunar cycle, the Waxing Moon "gets bigger" until it becomes Full. Some traditions say that this period is ideal for setting intentions or planting seeds, while the last two weeks, the Waning Moon "gets smaller" until we have a New Moon or dark sky. Metaphorically this may be a good time for releasing. Consider finding insight in your life by following the Moon's balanced luminance patterns of creation and release.

What creates the phases of the Moon? Hint it's not the Earth's Shadow.

Imagine standing in a bright spotlight on a stage, facing the audience, wearing a moon-colored MooMoo. Five feet directly in front of you is a twirling ballerina wearing a blue tutu (let's call her Earth). She smiles as you start slowly sashaying around her in a circle keeping your distance without ever letting her see your behind. By the time you've gotten back to where you started on stage (29.5 days later!), you will have gone one full rotation around the ballerina AND made one slow spin to keep your bum hidden. Meanwhile, the undizzied ballerina has only seen the front side of your head and MooMoo. You were fully lit (Full Moon) at the start when you were facing the spotlight, then as you made your way between the ballerina and the spotlight on her ~14th twirl, your unlit face and MooMoo were a dark shadow (New Moon) because the spotlight was behind you.

And, you, our MooMoo-wearing Moon person, were only partially lit up when you were on either side of the ballerina (Quarter and Crescent Moons). Your bum was fully lit for the audience to see as you did your slow spin! Turns out there's no such thing as a permanent dark side of the Moon. Shocker, I know. But we like to keep it Light over here!

Ok, thanks for doing that sciencey dance with us. Now that you have completed a lunar cycle in a MooMoo and have a refresher about precisely what the lunar cycle is, you're already getting in sync with the intelligence this beautiful astral body offers. So what other nuggets of wisdom await?

Even if you're someone who only rarely notices the shape of the Moon in the sky, its monthly-ish twirl can have a subtle or not-so-subtle effect on your life. For example, you may be aware that the Moon controls the ocean's tides and it’s theorized that because you are made of more than half water it impacts your emotional state. In addition, a 2021 scientific study showed that the synchronization of menstruation with the lunar phases isn't by chance. And, in an even more subtle way, the Moon has the power to change the length of our day!

Recognizing the power of the Moon at a scientific level is helpful and aligning with this natural calendar is one of the most fundamental ways to connect with the wisdom of nature and within you.

2.Dedicate Positive Actions to specific Ancestors

Another way to learn and apply ancient wisdom is to identify and honor individuals within your historical lineage or any ancient tradition that resonates with your beliefs. This practice helps you connect to the positive traits of your selected person (a family member, a historical figure, a saint, etc.) and integrate them into your life through action. Once you have your Ancestor in mind, consider their passions and brainstorm a particular activity that you could do to pay tribute to their life's energy. For example, if your grandmother loved butterflies and caring for others, maybe you'd like to visit, donate, or even plant a butterfly garden in her honor.

The practice of dedicating a meaningful activity or service-oriented ceremony to a loved ancestor is present in nearly all traditions. It elevates your consciousness and can help you see remarkable qualities within yourself.

3. Notice Synchronicity

bright lights

Swiss psychologist Carl Jung offers a body of knowledge and insights about tapping into the collective consciousness and ancient wisdom. He was the first doctor to note the concept of synchronicity. As he defined it, synchronicity is "a coincidence in time of two or more causally unrelated events which have the same or similar meaning." Essentially it's those moments where you could just laugh off a coincidence and think no more of it… or you can pause for a moment of wonder. Is there something more extraordinary, my own consciousness, or perhaps energy from beyond, that has aligned this mystifying sequence of events?

This practice is dedicated to heightening your awareness of these experiences and inviting you to gather as much insight as possible. They often come quickly and dissipate over time. So it's vital to "grab them while they're hot" and put aside your dismissive thoughts. Let these uncanny coincidences be an opportunity for wonder. The more you pay attention and honor the astounding nature of each event, you'll likely notice more to follow. Although no science specifies the origin of these sometimes subtle and sometimes mind-bending events, they are widely documented.

You may already have a belief about what creates these little winks, or you may stand firm in the idea that they are only coincidences. Either way, this practice takes a moment to juice them for any insight. There may be a rapid aha, or perhaps nothing immediately comes to mind. Either is good. The important thing is to note what happened - maybe even keep a journal, and/or take pictures and allow these moments of mystery to unfold and offer guidance over time.

4. Enjoy an Awe Inspiring Wilderness Experience

As your perspective broadens or deepens, you gain a higher-level view of your inner world, life, or community. In these moments or sustained points of view, you have access to guidance that allows you to live in and share harmony. Often gaining this perspective and incorporating it into your life takes years of cumulative learning and experience to ultimately come to clarity. And, in some cases, a hefty dose of wilderness-injected awe can serve as a time portal into a new stage of learning and growth. Research documents the profound and healing effects of being in nature. Evidence shows that you can restore balance in your body, increase your attention span, recuperate from stress, and improve your mood by getting into the wild. You may have experienced this - and if not, we encourage you to explore. One example of finding that moment of "awe" is finding yourself at the top of a peak where a vista takes your breath away. Or those calm moments sitting by a pond or river and a duck and her chicks make your heart leap. These sweet moments that catch you by surprise and remind you of what an incredible place we all call home are fuel for the wisdom culminating inside of you.

During one UC San Francisco (UCSF) study, participants were asked to take "awe" walks weekly. As revealed through photo documentation and other findings, researchers noted that participants had a noticeable transformation over the 8-week study by finding something inspiring or amazing in nature. So open yourself to the wonder of nature's infinite consciousness as you discover your brightest path.

5.Try a Generational Gratitude Meditation

One practice that may support your path to gaining perspective and insights to better guide your life is giving thanks to those who came before you. As with any type of learning, opening your heart and mind is the first place to start. And this Generational Meditation honors the collective wisdom within your ancestral roots.

  • Begin by finding a comfortable seat and taking several slow, deep breaths as you release tension from your muscles. With your eyes closed, set an intention to be guided by infinite awareness and feel a connection with your helpful ancestors.
  • With this seed planted and resting into a natural breathing pattern, notice any sensations you may feel throughout your body. You might feel tightness, tingling, or different temperatures in different areas. Take a deep breath into each tight area and feel another layer of relaxation.
  • As you settle into the moment, you may notice thoughts or colors, patterns or images that come to mind. As these arrive, notice them without judgment and allow them to fade into the background.
  • When you feel ready, imagine yourself as a bright purple or blue light with rays that light your ancestral line. As your light travels from this moment back in time, imagine these rays carrying love and gratitude to all those who came before you. Feel their strengths and forgive their stumbles. Light the branches of your ancestral tree as far back as you can see in your mind's eye.
  • With a glowing map in your mind, invite the wisdom attained by your descendants to flow into your life. See the life and light of the tree nourish the base – you.

Release your visualization and calmly observe your mind and body. Notice any senses or images that arise. Rest here with attention and curiosity as long as you'd like before slowly opening your eyes.

Open your Mind, Change your Life
Open your Mind, Change your Life

By Dr. Tara Swart. In the past decade, I've transformed my life using the power of visualization. My own journey led me to turn my back on my traditional medical career as a psychiatrist, learning to tune into my deep inner wisdom and intuition, and risk everything to carve out a new career as an executive coach. I realized that the key to creating the life I dreamt of lay within my brain – what I call 'the source'. This is a realization that I have come to as a result of my Ph.D. research in neuroscience, but also as a result of my openness to more esoteric and alternative practices. I believe that visualization is at the heart of autonomous creativity, and I passionately believe that by training yourself to visualize in a focused way, anybody can manifest a more fulfilled, successful, and happy life.

In the early years of my practice I assisted people with managing their anxiety, depression, ADHD, grief, etc. They would make progress, temporarily, but the behaviors they had shifted seemed to just shift back over time. This would drive me insane! How can I help people to make a permanent shift?

Tiny reminder of intentions

I love the subtle reminder and the practice of setting meaningful intentions. They do hold up well. ( Of note, they will come off faster with hand sanitizer than hand soap. )
