Practices Visualize

While focusing your attention is a key principle of living with intention, giving your mind freedom to explore and dream is too! May it be starry night or just a few minutes between meetings, let your mind traverse boundless possibilities. When you invite curiosity and expansive thinking into the present, you make way for new ideas and connections to unite.

Moments of mental spaciousness deepen your connection to the present and expand your perspective. When you allow room for dreaming and exploration, ideas surface naturally, free from the constraints of rigid thought. Mind-wandering allows thoughts to drift without a specific focus or direction. Research shows that this process enhances creativity, strengthens problem-solving skills, supports emotional processing, and improves overall well-being.

In a world that prioritizes focus and efficiency, setting aside time for open-ended thought can feel unfamiliar or even unproductive. Yet, these mental pauses are where inspiration thrives. Letting your thoughts wander opens the door to unexpected breakthroughs, whether in personal reflection, creative work, or everyday problem-solving. When the mind is not tied to a specific outcome, it explores more freely, making space for fresh perspectives to take shape.

By inviting curiosity into ordinary moments, you cultivate a mindset that embraces exploration and discovery. Whether through a quiet walk, a few minutes of daydreaming, or simply looking up at the sky, giving yourself permission to think without limits can lead to surprising insights. Below are a few ways to bring more expansive thinking into your daily life.

If you'd like to get started by strengthening your ability to tap into the present moment or explore other mindful themes within the Brighter Being System, take a peek at our Visualize Guide.

Let Your Mind Wander

alt text

Letting your mind wander creates space for thoughts to move freely, without pressure or expectation. In a world driven by constant input and productivity, aimless thinking might seem unproductive, but it often sparks creativity, reveals new insights, and brings mental clarity. Without the constraints of a specific task, the mind forms unexpected connections, revisits old ideas with fresh perspective, and uncovers solutions that structured thinking might miss.

Drifting thoughts also give the brain a chance to reset. Whether it leads to a creative breakthrough or simply a quiet moment, the process itself has value. The key is to engage in activities that allow thoughts to flow naturally, without a specific goal. Try the exercises below to bring more mental wandering into your day.

✨ Try This: Free Your Thoughts

  • Mental Time Travel – Think back to a past memory or imagine a future moment. Let your mind explore details, emotions, and what-ifs without restriction.
  • Sensory Walk – Take a walk and focus on sights, sounds, smells, and textures. Let your thoughts drift as you observe your surroundings without a specific goal.
  • Cloud Watching or Star Gazing – Lie down outside and watch the clouds or stars. Allow your thoughts to form freely, following whatever associations come to mind.
  • Music-Induced Daydreaming – Play instrumental music or ambient sounds and close your eyes. Let your imagination drift without forcing a narrative.

Go for a Valk Through Time

two people’s shadows on a walk

What’s a Valk?! It’s a practice we cooked up almost a decade ago and still love to do – a “Visualization Walk!” Since its creation, it has become our gold standard for our visualization practice. Here’s how it works. Head out for a walk with a friend with the intention of pretending as if it is a year in the future. You have to really get into character. This can feel a little awkward the first few times or even every time. We haven’t taken an improv class, but I’m guessing it's similar…with one exception. You want this “walk and talk” with your friend to feel as normal as the walk you would have taken with them yesterday. What things would you usually share with them? How would you share them? What’s your tone? Ok, now that the stage is set, “ACTION!”

Our conversations usually start with “How are you?” or “What’s going on in your life?” then we’ll share a bit about what happened YESTERDAY. Start there. Remember, this is your friend who you’ve likely been keeping updated for the last year, so you wouldn’t start by giving them a full bulleted report of the year you just had. You would talk about yesterday's amazing meeting or the incredible news you just got this past week. Remember, you’re LIVING this life because you’ve traveled in time. You might share what’s on your docket for the upcoming week. Whatever you share, do it with EMOTION. In the same way, you would share your excitement as if it were already true. Let the other person respond, ask questions, and get excited too!

Quick side story— During a Valk with my husband, I talked about how much fun I had visiting our friend’s place in the country the previous weekend and petting their fuzzy farm animals. That made me smile, so I went with it. I imagined myself petting a big fuzzy cow. This is an example of the fun you can have with your Valk content, and, of course, you can also focus on whatever aspect of your life feels most ready for a transformation. Warning – Be prepared for what starts showing up! Two days after this particular Valk, I ran into a giant golden, fuzzy cow one block from my apartment in the middle of downtown, where giant fuzzy golden petting cows are a very rare sighting! She was there for some cow beauty pageant, so I got to pet a fuzzy cow! 😂 No joke. And, for the cherry on top… I did not have a friend with a place in the country with lots of fuzzy farm animals at the time, and now I do - looking at you, Ms. Undercover Hippy! Maybe this wasn’t a life goal, but there it is, and I love it.

✨ Try This: Future Valk

  • Find a Valk Partner – Grab a friend, partner, or someone who loves a good imagination session. If no one is available, you can do a Valk solo by talking aloud or journaling after your walk.
  • Set the Scene – As soon as you start walking, pretend it is exactly one year in the future. You are no longer hoping for things to happen, They already have. Step into that reality.
  • Begin the Conversation – Start casually, just as you would on any walk. Try: “What’s been going on in your life?” and “Tell me about your week!” Answer as if you are actually living in the future you want. No need for a formal recap of the whole year. Just share as if you’re catching up on recent events.
  • Speak as If It’s Real – Share your successes with excitement as if they have already happened. Instead of “I hope to get this job,” say, “I love this role. Yesterday, I had an amazing meeting with my team.” Let your partner ask follow-ups like “What’s next for you?” or, if alone, speak aloud or record your thoughts.
  • Allow for Surprises – Embrace any unexpected details your mind throws in! These spontaneous ideas can lead to new possibilities or uncover desires you hadn’t fully realized.

Boarding Your Dreams

Visualization techniques, like those used in vision boarding, help bring your goals to life by making them feel real and achievable. The Reticular Activating System (RAS) acts as your brain’s personal filter, helping you notice opportunities that align with your dreams. When you create a vision board, you’re giving your mind a roadmap to focus on what matters most.

Vision boards also boost self-efficacy, strengthening your belief that what you want is possible. Research shows that mental imagery improves performance, and a vision board works the same way, keeping your mind engaged with your aspirations. Since nearly 30% of your brain is dedicated to processing visuals, looking at your board activates key neural pathways, sharpening focus and reinforcing your goals through neuroplasticity.

If you’ve already got a pile of magazines and a pair of scissors in hand, here’s a jumpstart guide to creating your vision board.

✨ Try This: Dream Boarding

  • Gather Inspiration – Flip through your magazines, and when something catches your eye - for whatever reason, cut it out! We like to give ourselves at least 30 minutes or more to “shop” for images that feel true and represent a desired future reality. The pictures or even words can be symbolic and sometimes, you may not know exactly why you love something you’ve cut. That’s ok. If that page or picture called to you, then keep it in your growing pile of cut out images.
  • Create Your Collage – Using a piece of paper/poster board and glue, begin to curate your collection of images. You might enjoy laying them all out in a collage before you start gluing. Or sticking them together one at a time may feel better for you. It’s your choice!
  • Give It Space – Let time and material be on your side. If you find yourself with images that seem redundant or end up not liking them as much, let them go! Also, if you are at the end of your allotted time and aren’t done, press pause and finish compiling when you have more time to set aside. You might also plan two different settings – one for cutting and another time for pasting. The point is to allow your creation to have some breathing room!
  • Keep It Visible – The final piece is perhaps the most important… put your vision board where you will SEE IT daily! If you want it to be more personal than your work desktop, you could find a place in your closet or next to your bed to allow those possibilities to stay at the forefront of your mind as you imagine your ideal future!

Final Thoughts on How to Manifest Something: Visual Imagery & Manifesting Methods

Giving your mind space to dream expands your perspective and deepens your connection to what’s possible. Whether through wandering thoughts, a visualization walk, or a dream board, these practices help bridge imagination and action. When you let curiosity and creativity take the lead, fresh ideas emerge, unexpected opportunities appear, and your vision starts to take shape. The more you engage with your goals, the more your brain aligns with them, making it easier to notice possibilities and take inspired steps forward. So go ahead and dream freely, explore often, and watch what unfolds.
